As a boy I had a bug in resin. I learned to draw by copying it. As in my paintings, my drawings are direct and ordered structures around which improvisation and revision become possible and productive. Though my pictures are abstract, I look largely at the figurative. Early Tuckson drawings for their declarative architecture; late Guston drawings for their doubt; early Italian frescoes for clarity; Cezanne for revision; Soutine for historical intelligence; Mapplethorpe's photographic work for volumes, light and form. Bug III comes as part of an inquiry into insects, ongoing since 2024. The name Bug stems from the subject, and is a reference to Guston's use of the word and his more mundane, colloquial language in his sequenced titles.
