I draw a lot. But i don't show my drawings often. I make them when I'm stuck, when I need to disappear into just making something or as sketches before starting a painting. They are my comfortable place.
This drawing is from a series of works I made of my friend Celeste Chandler as she was battling Cancer. Celeste passed away before I finished this portrait and the subsequent paintings that this drawing helped me to structure.
While finishing this work in my studio I lamented not spending more time while we had it and the conversations we will never have. She was clever, talented and seemingly demure with a streak of fierceness running through her middle. I miss her terribly and tried to pour some of the love I feel for her into this work.
