Drawing with charcoal gets to the heart of my vision without the complexity of colour and the painting process. Charcoal on paper establishes the core, or ‘truth’ of the image. The drawing process responds to the sensitivity of my gesture and also provides the resilient ground required for sustained working.
The submitted drawings, Column number two and Column number three, demonstrate how I use a length of willow charcoal to repeatedly trace the same size object. This action, in conjunction with the brittle material, results in imperfections I embrace and disruption to how the mind or eye would try to perceive a system.
