My creative practice uses drawing and painting to explore the fragility and dynamically transforming character of our natural world and oceans. Over the past five years I have developed a series of maritime themed drawings that visualise the changing shape of the oceans. Many of these have been shortlisted for national awards. “Fallen Star” is a new work and was inspired by the ongoing research and recent documentation of the Titanic wreck in the north Atlantic. The story of this ship has interested me since childhood and permeated popular culture, and yet the reality of the metal carcass lying 3.9 km below the sea evokes mixed feelings. The drawing took a while to render, shifting and changing like our memory of the vessel, until it sort of took on a life of its own. May she and all who sailed her rest in peace.
