This suite of studies drawn directly from life contributed to the creation of a large painting, depicting a frieze of figures seemingly sculpted by Prometheus himself and risen from the earth.
The concept was in part inspired by the Australian war artist Sir Ivor Hele whom was a great exponent of the heroic and many romantic and gritty themes.
The process of drawing was to analyse the structure of the human form and consider how these may be integrated into an ambitious multi-figure composition. Honing in on hands and fully exploring their character was important research for the painterly freedom that was granted in the final studio painting.
