I do love drawing as so much freer, looser and gestural, compared to my painting. I first drew this outdoors in the Goulburn car park. I liked the afternoon light on the buildings. But then I wanted to experiment with this robust Spanish handmade paper to see if you could keep the chromatic intensity. I love pastels for quick drawing but wanted to find a way to build up the intensity without needing to frame under glass. So later in the studio I tried different inks over the gouache and pastel, from Cornelissen, Sennelier and others. But after all it’s framed under glass for protection. The inks help make the road surfaces and figure more interesting and imaginary.
