Throughout my practice, I engage with drawing through repetitive processes that mark the passage of time. I am drawn to the immediacy and permanency of the applied mark, and the sense of discipline and intention that emerges from this approach.
‘Hold’ forms part of an ongoing series of works titled ‘Protective Structures’. Drawing inspiration from protective forms observed in the natural world, the series explores themes of privacy, protection, and boundaries. ‘Hold’ features a solitary central form, composed of tightly layered, parallel hatch markings, set against a background of roughly stippled black Indian ink. An accumulation of short, repetitive marks develops layers, visual texture, and rhythm in the work.
The immersive nature of my methodologies cultivates a welcome sense of distance from the complexities of contemporary existence, providing space for solace and contemplation.
