My work is a mirroring of the world around it, a reflection of Western culture. I adopt the low brow line of a colouring-in book in order to subvert the subject in an act of dumbing-down. I feel the realm of online images has collapsed into our lived space, opening up into a new merged reality of experience, blinding our senses. This drawing invites questions as to what is visible; the scale of line that was originally drawn quickly with a Sharpie pen has now been enlarged and rendered meticulously in black pencil. The cars are repeated and mirrored into an impossible configuration. What is un-real now exists in the real world.
For 35 years the Kedumba Drawing Award has been one of the pre-eminent awards for drawing in Australia. The addition of the $20,000 prize money will ensure that the Award continues to grow and build on its success for many years to come.
