Artist Statement

Peteris Ciemitis is a contemporary artist who has extensive experience in the fields of Art, Exhibition and Event Coordination. Peteris regularly exhibits in Australia and internationally, is represented in major galleries (such as NPG and the National Gallery of Latvia) and maintains a committed art practice based in Western Australia.
Ciemitis’ art practice is known for portraiture and his work frequently interrogates identity, subtext and context. Similar to his figurative work, his examinations of place also play with either the erasure of context, or the suggestion of intangible interventions as is the case in the diptych “LOC1132 (1) and (2)”.
His practice equally moves between painting and drawing, with the latter enabling an opportunity to reconstruct visual ideas through omission (ie, introduction of extensive negative space) or the use of fine linework to establish tensions between tone, form, movement and energy.
