The subject matter of my practice revolves mostly around spaces cluttered with curious objects. Antique shops and vintage stores are such places, teeming with life of earlier times, infused with nostalgia, slightly unsettling in nature. At the core of my practice is obsessive drawing – on site sketching, large charcoal drawing, drawing in my paintings. Depending on what medium I use – pencil, charcoal, paint, the same subject matter tends to take on a different feeling. When it comes to large charcoal drawings such as ‘Rejects and Relics’, it seems like the intense black of the medium and blurred edges of marks on paper invite a sense of mystery. Objects in the background dissolve into darkness, the foreground lights up, as if in the limelight. The shop becomes a theatre, objects consigned to oblivion are offered an abrupt renaissance and come back to life, even if for a brief moment.
