Artist Statement

Drawing is the major force that drives my practice. I use many sketchbooks to develop themes & ideas & ultimately create whole bodies of work. The sketches are used to choose what the finished major works will be; mixed-media drawings, Ink drawings, pencil drawings, narrative artist books, etchings or ceramics. The Bodies of work I create and exhibit are usually dominated by large mixed-media or ink drawings, augmented with a smaller number from the other disciplines.

The drawing created for this competition belongs to a particular genre of my work, that could be regarded as themes of Universal Issues. These are always large mixed-media works built up with pencil, gouache and soft pastel with compressed charcoal to define imagery, while all materials combine for mood & energy. This work is concerned with an endless lineup of old white men from history & the present obsessed with plundering natural resources for a notion of gain & progress while leaving destruction behind.
