Drawing is a methodology I employ to work out all sorts of problems within my painting practice. Drawings become a kind of blueprint or map from which to springboard off into further making. Sometimes I recognise that the drawing is the work and needs no further reiteration. In this work, Rest Stop, I worked with a variety of mediums on top of a second hand print of a landscape. Presenting a few locations within one drawing, I aim to express a generic dilapidation and sometimes a surprising delightful charm to the surroundings that are prevalent at quintessential look out points or rest stops. Using a wide mix of media allows me to experiment in innovative ways. I am always reminded of childhood when I work in this way, colour by numbers and colouring books were exciting chances to corrupt the system and 'finish the picture', in a manner unique to me.
