‘Still life with Vermeer postcard’ forms part of a recent group of drawings and paintings that reflect on items such as postcards and exhibition brochures collected whilst visiting the great museums and galleries of Europe. This is a way for me to deal directly and playfully with the artworks that have had a huge impact on me and my art practice.
Drawing from the visible world has been a constant form of discipline and engagement for me. Often a private activity, drawing is crucial in informing and giving direction to my painting practice. I am attracted to the structure of things, their proportions, spatial relationships, and the way light interacts with them. Whether it is an industrial landscape, a group of still life objects or the human figure, I am equally engaged with the possibilities and challenges of interpreting these forms through the act of looking and drawing.
