The Chess Players arose from time spent observing and drawing quick sketches of people in Hyde Park. Drawing small quick sketches forms the base of my art practice. The many immediate drawings have evolved into a series of larger drawings re-imagining the movement of people and the chess players and their audience. I work spontaneously using the little sketches as reference, trying to capture the energy and empathy I felt while in this bustling space. I work through a process of redefinition and mark making, between figure and ground, between representation and abstraction.
