When my pencil touches the paper I come alive! For me, drawing is intellectual, intuitive, meditative, scary and deeply sensual. This drawing is based on a plein air sketch and plant studies of the MacDonnell ranges (Tjoritja in the Arrente language) in Australia’s Northern Territory. The structure of the hills reminded me of folds of cloth in Early Italian Renaissance painting and I have greatly exaggerated the size of the tiny plants, to draw the viewer’s attention to their fragile, delicate yet hardy beauty. I have used a range of graphite pencils from 10H to 9B in this drawing.
