The magic of drawing and watching forms materialise still enthrals me, compelling me to capture the spectacular textural wood markings on a local gum tree hollow I frequently walk by.
Using a wide variety of drawing mediums including coloured pencil, conte and soft pastel to create multiple layers and detail, ‘Tree Hollow’ gradually emerged. I do believe it’s the Willow charcoal, tinted charcoal and compressed charcoal that really give this drawing dimension, due to their amazing depth and textural invoking capabilities.
I also delight in the charcoal family’s direct material relationship to the drawing itself…something very earthy and cyclical about using wood to draw wood.
