I explore drawing as a way of thinking through multispecies relationships during the current mass extinction crisis. I reference photographs of species observations on the platform, iNaturalist, combining images of various organisms recorded in a specific area to create a speculative ecology. Using intricate and detailed mark-making, I appropriate techniques of scientific illustration, realigning a tradition based on the study of individual species with contemporary understandings of multispecies entanglements. “Wild Deserts” was developed after conducting fieldwork at the conservation sanctuary UNSW Wild Deserts, in Sturt National Park, where locally extinct native mammals, such as the greater bilby, have been reintroduced to protected areas of the Strzelecki Desert. The drawing was created from photographic observations recorded at the sanctuary and includes a total of 25 species.
