Drawing invites an immediate and physical mark. It connects me to my art making in a way that is raw and truthful. In my drawing ‘Winter Wood’, I am drawn to the ideas of resilience, introversion, clarity and patience. My study of bare winter branches that have been pruned and tossed in a pile conjure ideas of winter as harsh and unforgiving, yet I am finding resilience and stillness, evoking images of hardships met with strength and determination.
Winter is a time for clear thinking and paring back, and of patience, all the while knowing that spring will return. The process is of making marks with ink and charcoal and following the lines of these twisted and bare branches, finding the light and shade, insight and simplicity, and connecting my subject with self.
