Artist Statement

This is a drawing of my daughter, Wren.

During lockdown 2020, we moved from inner Melbourne to a rural property in Djaara country, where we were isolated from other humans, but surrounded by life. I was privileged to watch Wren forge a fierce identification with her environment and the vivid world of wild things.

Where we live, erosion has exposed areas of shale – brittle sedimentary rock. Minerals give rise to a limited palette of earthy colours.

Drawing, intimate and raw, is the constant that links the various themes and phases of my art practice. It felt right to draw Wren out of something so elemental to her habitat.
