Born in Latvia in 1939 Jan Senbergs arrived in Australia in 1950 as Latvian refugee and when he disembarked at Princes Pier in Port Melbourne, Senbergs didn’t speak a word of English. He won many awards as a young artist and has had solo exhibitions since 1960.

In 1987 Jan was invited to journey to Antarctica with the Australian Antarctic Division aboard the Icebird for their annual re-supply of Australian bases there. This resulted in the 1988 exhibition of the Voyage Six- Antarctica series. Jan has been involved in many Artist in Residences and has lectured at Harvard for a short time.
He is represented in most State and Regional Galleries and received an Order of Australia in 2003 for his contribution to the arts.
