My name is Laurent Pouzet, and I am an emerging artist from Brisbane, Australia. I am thrilled to have the opportunity to exhibit here at the Kedumba Gallery and I am so thankful to have won the Emerging Artist Award and the Highly Commended Award, for Kedumba 2025. The winning work of my wife, ‘Mother’, was met with overwhelming love and support. Since completing the drawing, the baby boy she carried, Remi, has been born and is now 14 months old, the light of our world.
In my experience studying Visual Art, drawing has traditionally been seen as a medium preliminary to painting, rather than a resolved means of individual expression. My conviction is that drawing is the most primal visual medium and therefore one that connects naturally with audiences.
The theme of my work centres on ideas of beauty, attention and the transcendent - all through the medium of charcoal. This collection on display here contends specifically with the tension between the man-made and the natural - and the hidden beauty that lies beneath all things.
I am often drawn to objects with conventional beauty - flowers, rippling water, ancient marble busts. Equally, though, I am captivated by things not traditionally considered beautiful: the folds of a rubbish bag, the creases in worn hands, the clean contours of a mid-century chair.
It is my belief that with proper attention, all things, even those that we consider to be mundane, can reveal a beauty and comfort that transcends comprehension.

This is my beautiful wife, Sophie. I chose to draw this stoic pose, despite it contrasting with her naturally cheerful nature, because it captures a moment of quiet strength and unwavering resilience. This work is both a tribute to Sophie and an expression of my admiration for all mothers, honouring the sacrifice of their bodies, their lives, and their hearts for their children.
For 35 years the Kedumba Drawing Award has been one of the pre-eminent awards for drawing in Australia. The addition of the $20,000 prize money will ensure that the Award continues to grow and build on its success for many years to come.
